Methodology

1. Map consequential action

The analysis starts with tools, permissions, external systems, delegated agents, and irreversible effects. It asks what can still move after a pause request and which downstream systems enforce authority independently.

A front-end button is not credited as control unless the underlying workflow can acknowledge the state, preserve evidence, and expose incomplete containment.

2. Separate evidence from proposal

OWASP, NIST, OpenAI, and Anthropic provide relevant material on excessive agency, risk management, intervention, containment, and monitoring. They do not establish the Agentic Pause protocol as a standard.

Articles identify when a detail comes from a source and when it is a design recommendation. Aggressive product language is acceptable; invented incidents, adoption claims, and compliance status are not.

3. Test recovery, not the demo

A pause mechanism is evaluated at awkward moments: multiple tool calls, lost acknowledgements, changed credentials, stale state, and partial external commitment. Useful measures include containment time, state completeness, decision ownership, duplicated effects, and recovery integrity.

Corrections update the public page and modified date. Protocol feedback and implementation evidence can be sent to the control desk.
